Patna, 2026 — Winning a State Championship is never easy. Defending it year after year is even harder. This year, however, the challenge was unlike anything national-level sprinter Atul Anand had faced before.
For the first time, the Bihar State Athletics Championship underwent a major change in its competition structure. The separate Under-20, Under-23 and Men's categories were consolidated, with every athlete aged 20 and above competing together in a single Men's division.
The change significantly increased the depth of the field. Younger athletes entered their prime years, experienced competitors continued to battle for medals, and the level of competition rose considerably.
"It wasn't just another championship," Anand said. "This time, everyone above 20 was competing in the same category. Naturally, the competition became much tougher."
The new format meant that athletes who would previously have competed in different age groups were now racing against one another, creating one of the strongest men's fields the State Championship has seen in recent years.
Despite the increased competition, Anand once again delivered when it mattered most.
Competing while still recovering from an injury suffered just weeks before the championship, he fought through the rounds to secure one gold medal and one bronze medal, extending his remarkable streak to six consecutive Bihar State Championship titles.
The victory carried extra significance because it came under conditions that demanded even more from every athlete.
"When the level goes up, you don't defend your title based on what you've done in the past," Anand said. "You have to earn it all over again."
Those close to the championship believe the new competition format made every medal considerably harder to win.
"With the categories merged, the standard became much higher," said a fellow competitor. "Winning in this field carries even greater value because everyone capable of competing at the senior level was in the same race."
For Anand, however, the result was never about proving others wrong.
"It has always been about competing against the best available. If the competition gets stronger, it pushes you to become stronger too."
His latest triumph reflects more than speed. It reflects adaptability, resilience and the ability to perform under changing circumstances.
Six consecutive State Championship victories would have been an extraordinary achievement under any format.
Achieving the sixth title in the toughest field the championship has witnessed in years makes the accomplishment even more meaningful.
With another State Championship behind him, Anand has already turned his attention to the next challenge.
The competition only gets tougher from here.
And that is exactly how he wants it.
