Aakanksha Welfare Society is empowering India’s marginalized people
In India, where over 900 million people belong to low-income and marginalized groups, accessing government welfare schemes is still a big challenge. Every year, the Indian government launches more than 13,000 welfare schemes, allocating about ₹20 lakh crore. Yet, lack of awareness, complicated paperwork, and tough application processes block millions from getting real benefits.
Aakanksha Welfare Society, a new kind of social initiative, is playing a leading role in tackling these challenges and changing how India’s marginalized people access welfare.
Tech & field support combined
Aakanksha’s main goal is to make information about government and private welfare schemes easily accessible and help people apply. Through its mobile app and web platform, it identifies suitable schemes based on citizens’ profiles, assists with applications, and provides help from trained field executives—from paperwork to tracking applications.
Their app is available in various Indian languages and can show relevant schemes based on a user’s location, income, and occupation.
Impact & success
Since its founding, Aakanksha has already connected many citizens in West Bengal to government schemes and delivered direct financial benefits. They aim to train over 100,000 field executives nationwide, so unemployed youth can also become self-reliant.
Founder and CEO Shri Sushanta Majumdar says, “We realized that not just technology, but awareness, trust, and support are needed for these rural, marginalized people. So we combine tech with human support, allowing people to access various government and private social schemes easily from home through Aakanksha.”
Awards & partnerships
Aakanksha has received recognition from organizations like the UN, World Economic Forum, and NITI Aayog for its innovative model. They also work jointly with central and state governments, NGOs, and corporate partners.

Especially during pandemics or natural disasters, the organization has played a vital role in delivering emergency aid to migrant workers, daily wage earners, and small businesses.
Future direction
As the government pushes for Digital India, models like Aakanksha can truly benefit rural and marginalized people. The organization aims to reach over 20 million people in the next five years.
Aakanksha Welfare Society is not just a tech-based service—it’s a driving force for India’s socio-economic justice and inclusive development.
